NW Waste Technology Virtual Centre of Excellence II (NWTVCEII)

What is the project?
The NWTVCEII project involves the continuation and extension of a highly successful project that coordinates and delivers a suite of activities to support the development of waste management, recycling and technology industries within the Northwest.

The overall aim of this project is to continue to provide technical support to the region’s recycling and waste sectors through advice provision, increased investment, partnership working and referrals.

There are five specific project objectives.

  • To assist 1,320 companies in the Northwest’s recycling and waste sector, with 165 jobs created and 400 jobs safeguarded, with £25.5 million value added to the sector by March 2012.
  • To stimulate research and development and to develop new/existing waste management and recycling technology by facilitating a network of researchers from universities, research establishments and private industry, which will be self-governing, by March 2012.  Envirolink will work with the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) to support 18 research collaborations between universities/private sector research establishments and the private sector by March 2012. It will also support 150 businesses and an additional investment in the recycling and waste sector of £1.5 million, by March 2012.
  • To stimulate the technology commercialisation/demonstrators by assisting recycling and waste technology businesses with near-to-market technologies, by facilitating full scale demonstrations of near-to-market technologies. This will include supporting 90 businesses, resulting in 15 jobs created, 90 jobs safeguarded, £6 million invested and 120,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill.
  • To ensure that the Northwest’s recycling and waste sector secures as large a share as possible of the growth and investment in the waste and recycling sector. This will be done by supporting 480 businesses, creating 145 jobs and safeguarding 200 jobs, bringing £8 million of private sector funds to the region by March 2012.
  • To develop sustainable markets for recycled material, by supporting and promoting 600 manufacturers and end users of recycled products, resulting in the creation of five new jobs, safeguarding 200 jobs, bringing £10 million of public and private sector investment to the region and using 450,000 tonnes of recycled product by March 2012.
