Maritime Sector Development

What is the project?
The project will create a single point of contact for the Maritime industry on Merseyside that will work with all public and private sector partners to ensure that the needs of individual businesses, as well as the industry sectors, port operations, shipping and logistics, maritime professional services and marine engineering can be met.

This will be achieved by bringing together and integrating the strengths of the professional marine services, ports operations, marine engineering and freight communities to create a world class cluster of businesses within the Liverpool city region.

The funding will enable Mersey Maritime to employ a core team to engage a large number of companies to create over 150 jobs, safeguard at least 85 further jobs and provide workforce development opportunities for over 250 individuals. There will also be a large number of other benefits to the maritime sector and the wider sub-regional economy. The main objectives of this project are to:

  • promote sector growth through business development;
  • implement cross-sector working initiatives;
  • raise and maintain the profile and awareness of the sector;
  • secure an adequate supply of skills to meet employer needs;
  • to develop the Mersey Ports Growth Strategy into a Mersey Ports Master Plan by June 2010; and
  • improve access to the ports and other logistics key infrastructure.

What is its purpose?
This project will create and deliver a sector development programme for the Maritime industry on Merseyside that will support productivity, business growth and job creation. This will therefore, help enhance the competitiveness of the sub-region both nationally and internationally.
