Grant for Research and Development

What is the project?
The project will contribute to increase the level of SME innovation and productivity in the region; a requirement supported by the former Department of Trade and Industry’s ‘Innovation in the UK: Indicators and Insights 2006 and the Northwest Economic Baseline Report (July 2005)’.

This project, which is stage one of a two-stage programme, will harness an initial budget of £2.3 million over an initial three-year period, to March 2012. It will be used to fund 30 Northwest SMEs with proof of concept research and development projects. The project will specifically target support at SMEs who can demonstrate a commitment to undertake knowledge-based collaborations where a high level of risk is preventing access to commercial finance.

What is its purpose?
To support the development and implementation of proof of concept funding for high technology in its early stages, or aspiring high technology SMEs. It is part of the new Department for Innovations, Universities and Skills (DIUS) descriptor for grant for research and development.

How much funding has it received from ERDF?
£1.1 million.

How much funding has it received from other fundng partners?
£1.2 million from all other project partners including the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).
